WHAT IS TRAVEL BASKETBALL?

Travel level basketball is youth basketball played at a higher level of competition above Recreational and below AAU Club levels, usually against other area school district community teams. Travel team eligibility is limited to students in grades 3 to 6 from the same school district, and usually requires participation in annual Tryout sessions.

Difference between Recreational and Travel basketball

RECREATIONAL
Recreational youth basketball is a fun, non-competitive way for young players to learn the fundamentals of basketball, develop teamwork, simple playing enjoyment. Unlike competitive Travel leagues, recreational basketball is less about winning and more about participation and skill development.

Ringgold Youth Basketball (RYB) participates with the Mon Valley Youth Basketball League (MVYBL) for our Recreational teams. All boys and girls in grades 3 to 6 will play on a Recreational level team. MVYBL is an association with the Belle Vernon, Frazier, and Charleroi school district community youth basketball organizations.

  • Teams are evenly divided with ability. There are no higher A and lower B teams.
  • All registered players will be rostered to a Recreational team pending enough parent volunteer coaches.
  • Teams are traditionally rostered by gender and then individual grade level, although mixed grades 3/4 and 5/6 are possible depending on final registration numbers and other rostering considerations based on final registration information.
    > Playing time is fair and equal every game; all players should play approximately 50% of the game
  • Regular season games are in January and February, generally on Saturdays but occasional weeknight games possible. One game a week.
  • Home games are played at Ringgold Middle School (RMS) gym, and Away games are played at a school district gymnasium in Belle Vernon, Frazier, and Charleroi.

TRAVEL (competitive)
Ringgold Youth Basketball participates with the South Hills Youth Basketball League (SHBL) for our Travel teams. SHBL is an association with other school district community teams in the wider South Hills of Pittsburgh geographic area. Although membership is subject to change slightly year-to-year, this usually includes community boys and girls teams 3rd to 6th grade from Upper St. Clair, Thomas Jefferson, Canon-McMillan, Peters Township, Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Baldwin, Chartiers-Houston, Chartiers Valley, Montour, and Elizabeth Forward among others.

  • Teams are rostered by invitation only to play on a Travel team following evaluations reviewed from annual Tryout sessions. Travel team rosters are established by ability level. Not all players who tryout will receive an invitation to play on a Travel team.
    > Playing time is not guaranteed. Equal playing time with all players on the team is not promised. Coaches should try however for meaningful playing time with each player every game.
  • Regular season games begin in December and end in February. Games could be different weeknights and/or weekend days one week to the next. This could include 1-2 games each week, but generally most weeks should only be 1 game.
  • Home games are played at the Ringgold Middle School gym, and the Shoot360 gym facility at the Cool Springs complex in Bethel Park. Away games are played at a school district gymnasium in one of the other SHBL member communities.
  • Registration and uniform costs per player are higher than if playing on a Recreational level team instead.
  • See AVAILABLE PROGRAMS AND REGISTRATION page under the Registration Tab of main website page for more details.

Why play Travel instead of Recreational?

Basketball is more than just a sport; it’s a passion that ignites dreams and fosters lifelong skills. For young athletes seeking to take their game to the next level, Travel basketball offers a unique and rewarding experience. Beyond the local courts and Recreational leagues, Travel basketball opens doors to a world of opportunities, challenges, and personal growth. But why pay more to play the same game? Answer: this is how we provide the school district with more competitive basketball teams in high school.

An advanced ability player can be held back developmentally on the court over time if not consistently playing with peers of similar skills and abilities. In general, a player should be ready for competitive Travel level basketball if they are able to do more on the basketball court than some of their grade-level friends.

Skill Development
One of the most significant advantages of travel basketball is the accelerated skill development it provides. Travel teams typically have more intense practices and play a greater number of games compared to Recreational leagues. This increased playing time translates to more repetitions and opportunities to refine fundamental skills like dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense. Furthermore, travel teams often have access to experienced coaches who can provide individualized instruction and advanced training techniques. By playing against diverse competition and learning from dedicated coaches, young athletes can develop a well-rounded skill set and reach their full potential.

Increased Competition
Travel basketball exposes players to a higher level of competition. Instead of competing solely against players within their school district or local communities, Travel teams face opponents from a wider geographical area, including some of the other top talent in their age group. This increased competition pushes players to elevate their game, forcing them to think strategically, make quicker decisions, and perform under pressure. Facing tougher opponents and more challenging situations helps players develop mental toughness, resilience, and a competitive edge that can benefit them both on and off the court.

Personal Growth
The benefits of travel basketball extend far beyond the court. The demanding schedule and competitive environment require players to develop essential life skills such as discipline, time management, and responsibility. Juggling practices, games, schoolwork, and other commitments teaches young athletes how to prioritize tasks, manage their time effectively, and stay organized. Furthermore, Travel basketball fosters teamwork, sportsmanship, and the ability to handle adversity. Players learn to work together towards a common goal, support their teammates, and overcome challenges with grace and determination.

Lifelong Friendships
Travel basketball provides a unique opportunity to form strong bonds with teammates who share a passion for the game. The shared experiences of traveling, competing, and overcoming challenges together create lasting memories and friendships that extend beyond the basketball court. These bonds can provide a sense of belonging, support, and camaraderie that can last a lifetime.

Conclusion
Travel basketball offers a transformative experience for young athletes who are passionate about the game. From advanced skill development and increased competition to college exposure and personal growth, the benefits are numerous and far-reaching. While the time commitment and financial costs require careful consideration, the opportunities for greater growth, development, and lasting memories make Travel basketball a worthwhile investment for dedicated young athletes. If you’re looking to take your game to the next level and unlock your full potential, explore the world of travel basketball and discover the endless possibilities that await.
